MGA is a fantastic family gymnastics center in Central Maryland. Gymnastics, cheerleading and tumbling classes are available for children of all ages, as well as gymnastics and fitness for adults.
The students begin with an evaluation of their skill level and then are placed in classes to help them develop their abilities. Students are encouraged to develop their abilities by kind, experience instructors and coaches to provide a nurturing caring environment for all students of all ages.
MGA Gymnastics began in Washington DC in 1964. We are a third generation business that has been serving the DC Metro community for over 50 years. Our center in Washington DC was founded by Carolyn and Jerry Shrewsbury. The center began as just a small tumbling program and grew into a 15,000 Square foot gymnastics center with gymnastics, tumbling and dance just a few short years later in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
Carolyn and Jerry Shrewsbury trained many national level gymnasts and sent many students to college with scholarships over the years. Carolyn and Jerry retired from the sport in 1990 and took jobs in counseling and administration within the school system. Their son Brian Shrewsbury began running the gym in DC during that time and incorporated business as Maryland State Gymnastics Center Inc.
In 1999 Brian Married Barb Taylor and became an instant dad to her 4 of her minor children and adopted three more children over the next three years. In the years that followed Barb and Brian raised their seven children homeschooling them and training them in gymnastics. The family traveled extensively and the children competed all over the country. They became accomplished gymnasts over the years wining awards as they grew up one even competing nationally and qualifying to the USA Championships meet in Colorado Springs.
Later when the children grew up they began working at the center and going to college gradually transitioning from competing to coaching and managing the business operations day to day. Today 5 of the children are grown and two of the younger children continue to compete and work at the center. Kellen Tichenor and Abby Tichenor have become partners in our growing business. Over the next 5 years our center grew and developed and became a wonderful place to work and to teach.
In 2010 Brian and Barbs family along with their new partners, Kellen and Abby Tichenor (son and daughter) began modernizing their business and bringing technology and new ideas to proved better customer service and a better leaning environment for kids and families. The next 20 years look to be quite busy and exciting.
